German Scientists Block Brain Tumor Stem Cells in Rats

(Heidelberg, Germany) – Scientists with the German Cancer Research Center report success in the treatment of brain tumors through the blocking of what they are calling brain tumor stem cells (BTSCs). The introduction of a specific ‘knock-out’ of the Tix gene in mouse tumors led to the loss of self-renewing BTSCs and the prolongation of the animal’s survival. These findings were published in the August 7, 20104 edition of the journal Cell Stem Cell.
