Grants & Funding Sources
Grants and funding to research stem cells and regenerative medicine are available from a variety of sources. These include:
Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) is one of 7 research councils in the UK. With an annual budget of 484 million pounds sterling, BBSRC supports about 1,600 scientists and 2,000 research students across the UK, and in some cases overseas. They recently funded a study of neural stem cells by Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Biomedical and Healthcare Sciences, the University of Cambridge and the Scripps Research Institute, California USA.

California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM)
CIRM is a state-funded organization created to support programs and cures through cell-based regenerative medicine. By providing projects not only with funding, but also with support, guidance advice and expertise, they have become an accelerator of medical science. Nearly 15 years ago, California taxpayers entrusted CIRM with $3 billion to navigate the unknown, to bring stem cell science from the research lab to the bedside. Today, California is a leader in regenerative medicine, having built a robust ecosystem that has transformed the global research community.

Director’s New Innovator Awards (NIH)
The Director’s New Innovator Award goes to 50 recipients nationwide each year, and grants individual researchers up to $2.3 million for their respective projects. It is designed to stimulate highly innovative research and support promising new investigators. The 2014 winners include Lili Yang at UCLA for research into stem cell-engineered killer T cells for cancer therapy and Michael McAlpine at Princeton for research into 3D printed nano-bionic organs.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)
JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. As the largest charitable supporter of T1D research, JDRF is currently sponsoring $568 million in scientific research in 17 countries. In 2012 alone, JDRF provided more than $110 million to T1D research.

Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund (MSCRF)
Our Mission is to develop new medical strategies for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure of human diseases, injuries and conditions through human stem cells. We offer programs to accelerate discovery, commercialization and clinical trials of human stem cell-based technologies in the state of Maryland.

National Institutes of Health Grants (NIH)
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) provides a wide array of research grant programs for biomedical research, including regenerative medicine. NIH grants cover 3-5 year projects with up to $500,000 per year; small 1-2 year projects with up to $50,000 per year; conferences and scientific meetings; and 3-year academic enhancement awards in biomedical and behavioral sciences of up to $300,000 per year. NIH grants also cover early stage 2-year research projects and clinical trials.
